Serena Rose was born in Lake Wales, Florida, on December 9, 1953. At an early age, she explored the wooded areas around the family home, developed an imagination filled with romantic and magical ideas, and discovered her artistic talents. She won her first award as an artist at age nine. Ten years later she met a gifted artist who rekindled her interest in painting. Later, in Key West, Florida, Serena met Paul Stevens, a figure painter and long-time gallery owner who recognized her talent, and she became a full-time apprentice in his gallery studio. For three years, Serena's studies with Mr. Stevens were serious and intensive, and concentrated on composition, design, figure drawing, color principles, and painting techniques. Other than her instruction and lessons with Mr. Stevens, Serena has developed her artistic skills without formal training. In 1991, Serena opened Serena Rose Gallery and Studio at the World's Fair Park in Knoxville, Tennessee. She exhibited and sold her art at the gallery and taught classes in drawing. Her studio became a classroom for the Knoxville Museum of Art, the University of Tennessee, The Summer Arts & Sciences Academy, Noah's Ark after-school program, and private tutoring. Because of the popularity of her classes in drawing realism, teaching became a full-time preoccupation for five years which involved over 750 students. In 1996, she quit teaching and closed her gallery so that she could focus on her art and her garden, as seen in the paintings in this exhibit. Her garden has become an integral part of her art and an exotic setting for her models. Now Serena is focused on a continuing series of paintings that best reflect her love of life and nature, and the child that still lives within her. Through her paintings, her early childhood dreams are becoming her own reality. Serena's art has been featured in many magazines. She sells her originals and publishes her art through her studio as limited edition giclees, and she sells her art on an international basis through her website and magazine exposure.
